It’s an exciting time to be working in Hounslow: a time of change within the Council.

 

Our management restructure has led to the creation of these two new roles.


Assistant Director Environmental Services and Culture
Up to £82k

This is a role with a broad remit, leading on a number of public facing services that have a direct impact on quality of life in the borough. The portfolio includes:

  • Highways and Street Cleansing
  • Waste and Resources Strategy and Operations
  • Cleaner Borough Strategy and Operations
  • Parks, Greenspaces and Public Realm
  • Leisure
  • Cultural Strategy and Operations, including Arts and Heritage


Effective contract management and partnership working will be central to success in this role. You’ll work closely with a range of providers under a number of frameworks: from wholly owned companies such as Lampton 360 (waste, recycling and greenspace services) to PFI contracts such as Hounslow Highways (highways maintenance and street cleansing functions) and registered charities such as FUSION (who deliver the Council’s leisure services). Community engagement is equally important and you’ll ensure that community collaboration is embedded in our approach to service design and decision making. You’ll lead on the Council’s Cleaner and Greener Hounslow initiative which is designed to improve waste management and improve recycling and the street environment across the borough. 

It’s a role that demands the technical knowledge to understand service provision and its challenges, coupled with the relationship building skills to foster open, collaborative working relationships that enable commercial partnerships to deliver the greatest value to the Council, and outstanding services to customers.

This is a high profile role within and beyond the organisation, and it demands the ability to maintain a strategic and long-term perspective, while recognising the importance of resolving local and immediate service issues. Outcome focused, you will be unwavering in your pursuit of performance improvement, but acutely aware of the need to bring others with you. Your track record should demonstrate how you have successfully connected strategic objectives to action on the ground, and that you possess the management skills to lead such a diverse portfolio of services.

Assistant Director Communications, Public Affairs and Engagement
Up to £82k

This is an opportunity to take on a central and highly visible role within the Council, advising at the very top level across the following areas:

  • Communications
  • Campaigns and engagement
  • Public Affairs and Government relations
  • Reputation management
  • Borough and Council brand and identity
  • Civic, corporate and parks events
  • Consultation and engagement


We’re investing to develop our Communications capacity, growing the team to enhance its ability to make a greater contribution to the Council’s strategic agenda. So it’s essential that as well as leading on the delivery of the operational requirements of an in-house communications function, that you bring clear ideas on how we can enhance our external reputation and influence.

You’ll ensure that Hounslow’s voice is heard by decision makers, and that our achievements are promoted and celebrated.

Community engagement will be an integral part of the role – we are committed to listening as well as telling, and in times of ongoing financial pressure it’s vital that we clearly understand the issues that matter most to our residents. And in a time of considerable organisational change there is a vital internal communications role to fulfil, giving staff a voice and ensuring that they have a clear understanding of the organisation’s ambitions and direction, and their role in supporting these.

We expect that you’ll already have convincing experience of strategic communications in a similarly complex environment. And it’s essential that you understand the dynamics of working within a political environment – effective reputational and risk management will feature strongly in your career to date. It’s important that our organisational values resonate with your own, so that you can passionately represent our borough from the heart, as well as from the head.
